A brief history of the area

The inauguration of the new deep-water harbour took place on 1 April 1976, accompanied by the establishment of a railway and an oil/gas pipeline that connected the port to Johannesburg. Subsequently, a residential expansion for Richards Bay emerged to the north of the harbour. The first suburb, Meerensee, was developed in 1970, succeeded by Arboretum in 1975, and Veldenvlei in 1980.

From June to August, the daytime highs are at a comfortable 23 °C, with a minimum of 12 °C.
